Road Blocker | Barricade
Product Description
Road Blockers are motorized security barricades, also known as Active Vehicle Barriers (AVB) often crash or impact tested to provide high security protection from threatening terrorist attacks. Road blockers are considered to be the highest levels of security for vehicle control, for the protection from unwanted vehicles entry that have a risk of a hostile attack. The road blockers provide many levels of stopping power – the strongest being a K12 (old standard, but commonly used in Lebanon), capable of stopping a 6.8t truck traveling at 80kph (50mph) – , and are usually installed for premises such as banks, embassies, military areas, etc…
Most of the times, road blockers are operated by a hydraulic system and can be surface mounted, installed In the ground or even mobile for special events or temporary premises.

How to Select a Road Blocker
The first step to selecting a road blocker is conducting a proper threat assessment. For this, our experts are equipped to assist you. Once this is done, there are several criteria that you need to address when selecting a road blocker.
Road Blocker Design
- Clearance – before choosing a road blocker, you need to know the size of the raod where it needs to be installed, and the clearance, which is the width provided to vehicles to pass through the road blocker when it is in the “open” position.
- Durability – when you invest in a road blocker, you want it to last. In order to ensure a long-life, you will need a supplier who can perform regular maintenance and you will need good product durability. For instance, you need to assess how much weight can the road blocker sustain or how many cycles can the road blocker operate before its operation is affected.
- Mobility – There are several road blocker models. Based on your safety plan and site layout, our experts can help you choose whether the most suitable road blocker is fixed, surface-mounted, movable, temporary, etc.
Road Blocker Safety
Compliance – Consider whether the road blocker is designed with safety in mind. You need to ensure the safety of the operating personnel and the surrounding area. Compliance to international safety standards can help you in your assessment.
Security – Like any security system , road blockers should provide tamper-proofing features. Access points should only be available from the secure side of the barricade.
Crash-rated – Whether the unit has been tested (not engineered or designed) using a recognized test method or rating system for vehicle crash testing. Rating systems are defined by some combination of the size, velocity, and angle of approach of the design vehicle and the allowable penetration distance.
Operation and Control of the Road Blocker
Road Blocker Mechanism – Mechanism for controlling barrier employment (e.g., hydraulic, pneumatic, electro-mechanical, manual).
Access Control – How does the road blocker fit in the overall site access planning and how is it operated?
Operation Mode – The mode of operation is either an open or closed mode. This status can often be a function of the hydraulic design.
Failure Mode – The presence of a fail-safe/fail-secure status. (e.g., security of the site might be increased if barrier moves to the raised or closed position following failure (i.e. fail secure)).
Cycle Time – Normal operating cycle. Once activated, time to complete the open and/or close process (pass-through rate or number of cycles per hour). Affects the possible rate of traffic flow and is site dependent.
Response Time – Time to initiate employment (activation time) of barrier (e.g., time between operator’s command and barrier’s response to the command).
Emergency Operation – Emergency fast operation (EFO) (aka emergency cycle): Once activated, expedited time to complete the open or close process, using atypical operating procedures.
Road Blockers Crash-Rating
While K-rating is still commercially commonly used, its standard is obsolete.
- K12 rating represents: nominal impact speed of 80 kph / 50 mph; with permissible impact speed range of 75 above kph / 47-56.9 mph; a kinetic energy of 1,695,000 J / 1,250,000 ft-lb
- K8 rating represents: nominal impact speed of 65 kph / 40 mph; with permissible impact speed range of 60.1-75 kph / 38-46.9 mph; a kinetic energy of 1,085,000 J / 800,000 ft-lb
- K4 rating represents: nominal impact speed of 50 kph / 30 mph; with permissible impact speed range of 45-60 kph / 28-37.9 mph; a kinetic energy of 610,000 J / 450,000 ft-lb
As for the new ASTM standard F2656; K12 is more or less equivalent to the M50-P1 ranking. K8 to the M40- P1 and K4 to the M30-P1. The new DS performance criteria limits
penetration of the front edge of the cargo bed to one meter beyond the pre-impact, inside
edge of the barrier.
The P represents the penetration after impact:
- P1 <=1m
- P2 = 1.01-7m
- P3 = 7.01-30m
- P4 = 40m+
